This is an elegant blast from the past

Full disclosure, we were at the Cavalier just as COVID 19 really started making its impact known, so the hotel was in the midst of making a LOT of adjustments. Notwithstanding that, even as employees knew or feared what might be to come, absolutly everyone that we came into contact (6 feet or more away) with were incredible. Starting with our friendly, helpful and one-deep valet, then to our unique sit-down, have a glass of champagne checkin the stay started out and stayed first class. An upgrade into a suite that was, honeslty, the nicest hotel room I have ever stayed in, and I have stayed in a LOT of hotel rooms. Each suite I was told is decorated differently, ours was a horse theme, crossed polo sticks on the wood planked wall behind the leather couch. A chair made like a saddle, with stirrups, even, that looked so uncomfortable and was so incredibly comfortable once you sat in it. My wife can attest, she took an hour's nap in it! Wonderful bathroom with seperate huge shower and soaker tub, plush linens and very nice toiletries. Bedroom was spacious, the sheets fantastic, and I am frankly a sheet snob. These were wonderful. The room was immaculately clean and fresh smelling. Our view was out over the expansive what used to be grand entrance lawn from the road up the hill and to the hotel, with the ocean in the background. Not too shabby!. Due to circumstances our reservation for dinner in Becca, the more formal dining room, was cancelled, but we were able to get in to the Hunt Room, which is an intimate, leather and wood, hunt-themed restaurant with an original fireplace and tons of atmosphere. In spite of the circumstances a full menu was offered, our server was fantastic and the food, far from the "simple" the Hotel advertises, was elegant and delicious. I had Cornish game hen, my son a duck creation and my wife a filet on hot stone. All of it was tremendous. The Hunt Room is right next to the in-house distilery, which you can see thru some glass walls in the bar, and many of the libations are made using the home grown spirits. I had a Cavalier distilled rye based drink that came smoked. Never had that before, it was way cool and delicious. The next am we had breakfast in the hugh Flodia room of Becca. Such a pleasant setting with the sun streaming in and the views of the beautifuly landscaped and maintained grounds. Breakfast was very good, the sausage fantastic and really, really good coffee. Matt was our host, server and bus-boy, as well as conversation partner. Again, this is a tough time, but you would never know it from Matt.. THANK YOU, Matt! And the next morning we had Amanda, who was every bit as great as Matt and chatted with us as old friends. Really made things special, so THANK YOU, too, Amanda! Unusually warm day for March in Va Beach so we went outside and sat in some of the comfy sofas that overlook the Atlantic Ocean, then went in and sat on elegant furnishings in the main lobby area, again overlooking the ocean. After a bit they open the doors to the outside, close the inner glass doors so they expand the outside area to include inside, protected seating that is still al fresco, while you still have the views from inside. Really neat thing to do. Every staff member we encountered offered a cheery hello and most inquired if we needed anything. Under the circumstances we did not make use of the beaurtiful indoor pool, and the luxurious Beach Club was close for some remodeling for the summer crush. But at 85 rooms i cannot imagne anything feeling crushed, rushed, hurried or anything other than awesome at this new favorite hotel, sorry Ritz Carlton New Orleans, you are now number 2. Can't wait for things to get back to normal so we can stay again and take in everything this jewel of a hotel has to offer. Bet you did not know, legend has it as haunted; Adolph Coors of Coors beer fame committed suicide by jumping from the 6th floor apparently in the stock market crash. Absolute highest recommendation
